Airbus A321

Following the experiment with reduction of the А320 flagship, the Airbus S.A.S.’ designers decided to try and increase both the aircraft all-up weight and its flying range. This resulted in a huge narrow-bodied Airbus A321 aircraft of almost 45 meters long, which nowadays performs passenger and charter flights on routes up to 5 950 kilometers. If the baseline А320 had a seating capacity of 150-180 passengers, the sale of the new version of aircrafts has become popular also due to a capacity of 185 passengers in the business/economy modification and 220 in the economy one. For the first time, the Airbus 321 took off more than 20 years ago, and still remains reputable up to the present day. Boeing 757-200 could be called its main competitive analogue; however, much also depends on the air company servicing the flight.

As for amenities, flying by Airbus A321 is as good as by the wide-bodied analogues. The Airbus A321 cabin allows comfortable accommodation for even low cost passengers. The cabin layout represented by the Airbus A321 owner makes it possible to choose the best seats with the seat back reclining option and large space for legs. Flights of up to seven hours make people prepare for travel beforehand and choose the most comfortable accommodation for a travel time. The two-class configuration of the Airbus A321 cabin layout shows that business class may accommodate sixteen people, and the economy one – 169. Nevertheless, many people prefer to book wider seats in the spacious first class for a proper rest during the flight, but when flying in a big company, the economy class is quite OK.

The Airbus’ A 321 advantages are constant modification, updating of avionics and efficiency improving of the version according to the New Engine Option program. Today the customer is offered to install on the Airbus A321 a new Pratt & Whitney PW1000G or CFM International LEAP-X engines delivering fuel saving by 16% and a flying range increased by 950 kilometers. If necessary, an extra-long-range fuel tank may be installed in the hold, thus enhancing the “durability” of the massive Airbus A321 as it is. Hereby, the updated TFEs’ thrust ensures 2 tonnes of extra load. We should not omit to note the sharklets on the wingtips, which show their properties at long distances, with 3.5% fuel saving, 500 kilograms of increased lifting capacity and 180 kilometers of increased range. The cruising limit increased up to 11 800 meters has also been achieved due to retrofit installation.

The flight strip for the Airbus A321 take-off and landing is to be at least 2 180 meters with a full load. The average flight speed is 840 kilometers an hour (0.78 Mach number) and it hardly ever lasts over seven hours. The Airbus A321 avionics is represented by the digital complex EFIS (TOMCOH-CSF, France), with its reliability proved by ARINC 700. The complex consists of the six multifunctional displays in the cockpit providing a pilot with visual and significant information about all on-board systems operation, alerting to emergencies or failures, and also constantly ensuring control of the current flight parameters.
